Creating a self-care routine that sticks has been a journey for me, especially as a parent.
My routine is two-fold: tasks that fit around my child's schedule and self-care appointments that I plan ahead. I’ve learned to block out time in my planner, treating it like an appointment—because it really is! After my son was born in 2022, I thought I could keep up my old routine, but I quickly realized that wasn’t going to happen. Now, I either plan self-care during my son's time at preschool or schedule a sitter on the weekend if my husband’s not available, so I can really enjoy my "me" time without interruptions.
If you’re looking to create a self-care routine that sticks, here’s my advice: Schedule it. It doesn't have to be extravagant or long. Start small by blocking out 10 or 15 minutes daily, treating that time as sacred. Whether it's reading a book, meditating, or just stepping outside for some fresh air, make it non-negotiable.
Another tip: Plan ahead. Just like booking any other appointment, plan your self-care services or downtime in advance. That way, you’re committed, and it becomes something you look forward to. I even put certain self-care tasks on repeat in my planner so they become a consistent part of my routine.
